Black Women Behind the Lens

An evening of short films and Q&A at BFI Cinemas Stephen Street, on behalf of Million Youth Media as part of Camden Council’s Black History Season 2025.

I was tasked with curating an uplifting space to celebrate a new generation of Black British women filmmakers making waves across the industry. The programme spotlighted a range of both fictional and documentary short films, each followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker about their process. Knowing that the audience would primarily be other young Black women aspiring to work in film and television, it was important that we hold space for the challenges faced by this underrepresented group, from institutional barriers to impostor syndrome.

The screenings were followed by the Black Women in TV panel, featuring actors, producers and directorial crew members discussing the behind the scenes of the small screen. The ended with a drinks reception where participants and audience members could network and build community.

I led the programming of the event from film selection, to public comms and scheduling. I was supported with panellisr bookings and logistics by producer Gaby Lafor, who also hosted the TV panel and one of the Q&A sessions. Technical support for the screenings came from Shehroze Khan (MYM) and BFIs in-house team.
